Welcome to Casa Grande, Arizona.
Casa Grande is a city located in Pinal County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,224. It is named after the ruins at the nearby Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. For over a thousand years, prehistoric farmers inhabited much of the present-day state of Arizona. When the first Europeans arrived, all that remained of this ancient culture were the ruins of villages, irrigation canals and various artifacts. Among these ruins is the Casa Grande, or "Big House," one of the largest and most mysterious prehistoric structures ever built in North America. Casa Grande Ruins, the nation's first archeological preserve, protects the Casa Grande and other archeological sites within its boundaries. You are invited to see the Casa Grande and to hear the story of the ancient ones the Akimel O'otham call the Hohokam, "those who are gone."
The natural beauty of the low desert and mountains that serve as a backdrop to the bustling city with the "hometown feel," and a climate dominated by sunny days make Casa Grande an enviable place in which to live, work, and play. This city offers every amenity of a big city with the rich history, rural heritage and friendly, easy-going atmosphere of a small town. Casa Grande is an active growth area with a balance of opportunities, including agriculture, retail, manufacturing, tourism and service industries. Casa Grande offers a broad range of facilities and activities, including a senior center, museums, library, bowling lanes, fitness and racquet club, as well as other exercise and fitness gyms and classes, public swimming pool, theaters, seven area golf courses, archery range and rodeo facilities. More than 20 parks are located in and surrounding Casa Grande, many with shade armadas, sports courts, softball diamonds and playground equipment. Casa Grande also offers convenient shopping, dining and other entertainment. A large outlet mall, featuring stores like Anne Klein, Nike, and Reebok is nearby. Most notable is Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, a looming prehistoric adobe structure built by the Hohokam Indians in 1350 A.D. Hiking, spring wildflowers, and the site of one of the only Civil War battles in the southwest can be found a half-hour away at Picacho Peak State Park. Outdoor activities abound with year-round gardening, hiking, biking, camping, and recreational vehicle travel. Snow skiing is available a mere three hours away in Flagstaff or the White Mountains. You can hike the Grand Canyon; enjoy the beaches of Mexico, or vacation in Las Vegas or San Diego, which is just an hour away by air or six hours by car.
